With the school year back in session, families are constantly on the move. It can seem daunting to make time for family devotions. That’s why I wanted to share some of my favorite books that make it easy for busy families to connect with God’s Word.
Search and Find Bible Stories
Search and Find Bible Stories [1] is a gorgeous and very inviting book. The illustrations tell 40 Old and New Testament stories and invite families to have a deeper discussion about them. There also are family activities that relate to each of the stories and drive the main points home. I used the Jonah story family faith talk as the start of my children’s message a few weeks ago. This is a wonderful book for church and home time!
How Can I Help? God’s Calling for Kids
The vocation of a child is a topic seldom talked about—and yet children yearn to be part of their faith community. In How Can I Help? God’s Calling for Kids [2], authors Mary J. Moerbe and Gene Edward Veith give a wonderful Scriptural foundation for parents and clearly communicate vocation to children. This children’s book is so beautifully illustrated by Jennifer Zivoin. You will want this book for your family and classroom library.
Family Time: A Collection of 98 Stories and Devotions
It’s easy for families to read and apply the devotions to their own experiences with Family Time: A Collection of 98 Stories and Devotions [3]. Families with children of different ages can gain new perspectives within the story, discuss concepts related to the catechism, and process ways that they can take what they are learning and apply it to their own situations. I love the prayers at the end of the story or devotion that invite children to explore prayer on their own.
